Chapter 8
That day, I reached my room earlier than I had lately and was the one to wait for Emily for once. I didnât mind it.
I just laid back on our bed and felt my breath getting easier. I was tired and exhausted, but with a bit of luck, it wouldnât take much longer until this investigation was over and I could relax a bit more. And, hopefully, the same would be true for Emily. I knew her first days back would be time-consuming; she had warned me about it. Still, I had expected to be able to spend more time with her.
It was only a matter of time, I told myself. Sooner or later, we would get to enjoy some time for ourselves. Though, if my marriage with Amaranth went aheadâ¦
How would that change things between all of us?
Would I be expected to share the blondeâs bed and sleep beside her?
Maybe I should have clarified some of those details before telling her yes. It was too late for it now. I loved Emily, of that I had no doubt. I felt like I could grow to love Amaranth, even if not as much as I did the catgirl. Time would tell, I suppose.
Despite all those thoughts, I found myself easing into the bed, then closing my eyes and relaxing even further. Maybe it wasnât too surprising that I fell asleep.
Something tickling one of my ribs made me wake, and I blearily opened my eyes and looked at whatever it was, blinking when I saw a furry purple tail. It was a familiar one as well, and I followed its length and found my eyes meeting those of the love of my life. Emily smiled at me. She had taken some time for herself and changed her clothing into a tiny camisole that hid nothing of her body. Need took hold of me and my motions.
I pulled her closer, moving quicker with the aid of the runes Mei carved into my chest, taking her by surprise if the yelp that escaped her was any indication. A moan followed when I kissed her and again when my hands wandered down her frame.
We spent the following hours entertaining ourselves like that, then relaxed under the covers, her naked frame against mine. âI love you.â I told her, and she seemed to shudder at those words and looked at me with renewed heat.
âI love you too.â It almost seemed like she would say something more for a moment. I blinked at it, almost questioned her about it, then wondered if I was only seeing things.
After the last few days, it was difficult not to look at people and think they were hiding something. Despite how different the races in Argent were, some ticks seemed universal amongst those lying or hiding something. And after paying attention to such things, it almost seemed like I developed a new skill. It was an exaggeration, but it made me pay attention to slight signs that I had always ignored.
